It is always exciting whenever we get a brand new egg to grind for, within Grow A Garden.
With the arrival of the new Smithing Update, we got the brand new Gem Egg, which, whilst the event is limited edition, the egg has actually been added to the Egg Shop, which suggests that the Gem Egg could be a permanent addition to the game.
There are six brand new pets inside the Gem Egg, and for the first time, we have two super rare pets as the rarest within the egg. Keep on reading for the low-down on the new Ruby Squid pet.

The Gem Egg is particularly exciting, as it’s the first ever Prismatic Egg. Until now, the rarest egg was the Bug Egg, which is a Divine rarity egg, but the Gem Egg is a Prismatic Egg.
Grow A Garden devs killed it with the design of the Gem Egg – it is so cool. It’s white and red, with an iridescent effect, with different colored gemstones at the top, and when placed in your garden, there are sparkle animations surrounding the egg.
It really is a cool looking egg, and it’s a super unique egg too, because, for the first time, every pet inside the egg has a themed appearance with the same texture.
There are six pets inside the Gem Egg, and they are the following:
- Topaz Snail – 44.78% chance
- Amethyst Beetle – 31.84% chance
- Emerald Snake – 13.93% chance
- Sapphire Macaw – 8.46% chance
- Ruby Squid – 0.5% chance
- Diamond Panther – 0.5% chance
As I mentioned above, we’ve never had two pets with the same rarity chance before.
We’ve had eggs, like the Primal Egg, where there’s a 0.5% pet (Spinosaurus) and a 1% pet (Ankylosaurus), but never two pets with the same 0.5% chance.
As it’s a Prismatic Egg, it does have a long hatch time, of 8 hours, which I know upset a lot of players, but both the Bug Egg and Jungle Egg have hatch times of 8 hours+, so it’s no big surprise that the rarest egg they’ve ever created, would have a long hatch time.

It took me over 24 hours to hatch my first Ruby Squid, and the design is just amazing.
It is a really tall red colored squid, with the iridescent gemstone texture, just like the other five pets within this egg.
The elongated body of the squid has a glowing red halo surrounding it, with the eight tentacles, which move independently in different directions.
I can’t get over how amazing the design is. I love that it glows red for a ruby too, and part of me doesn’t want to mutate it with my Headless Horseman, as Nightmare will ruin the design, but I want the overpowered ability which comes with Nightmare, although, there is a chance that Nightmare won’t actually improve this pet.

What Does The Grow A Garden Ruby Squid Pet Do?
“Continuously copies a random pet’s passive (non-cooldown based).”
Players are so confused about the description of this pet, because it really is very different to any other pet within the game.
We already have the Mimic Octopus pet, which copies a random ability of another pet inside your garden.
The Mimic Octopus copies pet’s active abilities, so pets that perform something – like cooldowns, mutations etc.
Well, the Ruby Squid does the complete opposite of that, in that it copies another pet’s passive ability.
There are two types of pets within the game – pets with active abilities, which tend to have a time trigger (for example, they do X every X minutes), and there are pets with passive abilities, with no time trigger (for example, you don’t lose a reclaimer when having a Squirrel in your garden).
This means, the Ruby Squid is not as versatile as the Mimic Octopus, as there are fewer pets with passive abilities, compared to the pets with active abilities.

Which Pets Can The Grow A Garden Ruby Squid Copy?
Here is a list of some pets, which would work with the Ruby Squid:
- Pachycephalosaurus
- Squirrel
- Seal
- Koi
- Seagull
- Capybara
- Chicken
- Rooster
- Toucan
- Orangutan
- Caterpillar
- Iguanodon
- Ostrich
- Turtle
- Giant Ant
- Red Ant
- Raptor
- Kodama
- Corrupted Kodama
- Barn Owl
- Gnome
- Hedgehog
- Sunny-Side Chicken
- Dairy Cow
- Ladybug
- Blood Owl
- Night Owl
- Wisp
- Salmon
- Shroomie
- Axolotl
- Owl
- Blood Hedgehog
- Brontosaurus
- Sand Snake
When you place your Ruby Squid down in your garden, you get a pop-up message on the screen immediately, letting you know which pet the Ruby Squid is going to copy, and the Ruby Squid will copy that one single pet until you remove it from your garden.
If you have multiple pets in your garden, and they’re different pet species with different passive abilities, and you don’t want the squid to copy the pet it chose. You can simply pick the squid up again, and replace it, and it will choose a pet at random again.
Of course, the squid could choose the same pet over and over, but you get the option to choose which pet you want the Ruby Squid to copy, which isn’t something we can do with the Mimic Octopus.
What makes the Ruby Squid so amazing, is that you can use seven Ruby Squids and one pet like the Bronto, and all seven Ruby Squids will copy the Bronto, so you no longer need 8 squirrels, 8 brontos, 8 kois etc. The Ruby Squid works as a duplicate pet, freeing up pet inventory space.
You need to remember, the Ruby Squid will only perform its ability as well as its own individual weight.
For example, if you have a titanic Bronto, the Ruby Squid will only do its ability for its own weight, and not the weight of the pet it’s copying, so it’s not like it can perform the ability of titanic pets, but it is a super overpowered pet, and something every player should own at least 7 of, so you can use it to make a pet army for any pets with passive abilities going forward.
