The latest Grow A Garden update dropped today, and it’s the Black Buttercup Event.
It’s the second week of the buttercup themed update, and to say it hasn’t been well received is a crazy big understatement.
I’m not going to talk about how disappointing the event is, instead, I’ll explain how it works, and how you can complete the event as easy as possible.

Last week, the Buttercup Event launched, where we got a list of four buttercup themed quest tasks to do within 24 hours.
They’re all color related tasks, like harvesting 10 blue buttercup, harvesting 100 purple buttercups, harvesting 500 yellow buttercups and harvesting 1 silver buttercup.
Once you’ve completed each task, you get a number of Buttercup Coins, which you exchange for Buttercup Chests.
You can harvest mutated buttercups for each of the colors, and this makes the daily quests a lot easier.

With the Black Buttercup event, the event display has been expanded with the introduction of a new NPC.
Next to Brooklyn, we now have Lizzie, and Lizzie has different quest tasks for us, but they’re different tasks to Brooklyn’s tasks, because they are not daily tasks. They appear to be one and done for the week set of tasks, and we’ll still get to do the color buttercup tasks each day.
The black color variation and the white color variation of the buttercups are the rarest to grow, and it must be a 1 in 1000 chance, because it took me thousands of buttercups to get three black buttercups.
For the color tasks, we can use mutated buttercups for the “black” buttercup quest, like the burnt mutation, but the new NPC; Lizzie, will not accept mutated buttercups – they have to grow as the black variation, and not be mutated with a black colored mutation, which makes it so so much harder.

How To Do The Black Buttercup Event In Grow A Garden
When you first approach the Lizzie NPC, she will ask you for THREE Black Buttercups. As I explained above, they cannot be black mutations.
They must be grown as the black variation, and you do not have to be holding the buttercups. You can have them in your inventory, and they can even be favorited, and when you approach her, click “here” and she will take them from your inventory for you.
If you don’t have the 3 black buttercups, she will tell you that you have “X black buttercups, but I need 3”, and you cannot hand over 1 or 2 black buttercups. You need the full amount to be able to hand them over.

When you hand over 3 black buttercups, you get a pop-up message to tell you, you’ve been awarded the “1x Big Shadow Buttercup Seed”, and she says, that when you’re ready, come back for more.

When you speak to her again, she asks for another 3 black buttercups, and once you hand those over, you get awarded “1x Bigger Shadow Buttercup Seed”. Again, she says she has another quest for you, and to come back when you’re ready.

For the next quest, she says she is going to need FOUR black buttercups this time, instead of the THREE black buttercups you’ve needed for quest one and quest two.

When you hand over four black buttercups, you get a message to tell you, you’ve been awarded “1x Biggest Shadow Buttercup Seed”. Lizzie also tells you, she has one final task for you.

This time, when you speak to Lizzie, she says she needs SEVEN black buttercups to complete the “final” task.

Once you’ve handed over the seven black buttercups, you get a pop-up message to tell you, you’ve been awarded the “1x Beast Shadow Buttercup Seed”.

After handing over the last buttercups to get the “beast” version of the Shadow Buttercup, she tells you “Thank you for all your help! You’ve completed all my requests”.
There is no timer anywhere, like there is with Brooklyn and the color buttercup quests, so I genuinely think you get to complete the black buttercup quests just one single time.
In total, you’re going to need 3 black buttercups for seed 1, 3 black buttercups for seed 2, 4 black buttercups for seed 3, and 7 black buttercups for seed 4.
That means, you’ll need 17 black buttercups in total to complete the entire Black Buttercup Event.
Considering the black buttercups must be a 1 in 1000 chance, that means you’d need 17,000 buttercups, on average to complete this event – which is utter madness.
However, pets can help you out here, thankfully. If you have an alt account with a raccoon, you can farm the black buttercup, if you have it planted in an empty garden, like I did, so the raccoon can only grab that one single black buttercup.
Throw in some Hyper Hunger age-broken Mimics, which trigger every 15 seconds, and you’ll be able to get 17 black buttercups in no time, with only needing one single black buttercup.
Obviously, it isn’t easy to get that one black buttercup in the first place, and if you do get one, favorite it ASAP, so you don’t accidentally pick it, and use a Cleaning Spray on it, to remove mutations, before the raccoons get to work, and you’ll get your 17 black buttercups, and the 4 super rare seeds pretty quickly.
If you need to increase your buttercup numbers in your inventory, mass plant what you have, and then use the Pink Bunnies to “munch” them, and give you 2 x buttercups back each time, and then you can replant.
Alternatively, you can use Arctic Foxes to try and restock your Buttercups in the Seed Shop, to increase your inventory of buttercups.
