When it comes to Grow A Garden pets, the “chest” pets tend to be less impressive than the “egg” pets, and for the Trader Update, we got the new Gem Chest, with three new pets to try and collect.
Chests always have three seeds and three pets, ever since they were first introduced in the Corruption event back in the summer. For the new Gem Chest, the Clam is the most common pet to get, and keep on reading to find out what it does…

I don’t think I use any past chest pets in my daily Grow A Garden pets playing.
The Mummy pet was the most useful chest pet to date, as it added weight to pets you got from chests, but the Mummy was made almost pointless with the introduction of the epic Elephant.
For the Trader Event, you have to hand in specific fruits to the Trader Troy NPC on the event display, and for every task you complete, you get a “streak”, and the higher your streak, the better the rewards.
You can only get Gem Chests when you have a streak of 4 or more, so there isn’t really a way to “farm” this event, and farm the chests, as you can only do the hand-in with Troy, once an hour – it is a truly terrible event.
Inside the Gem Chest, here are the six rewards you can get:
- Gem Fruit Seed – 34.5% chance
- Clam Pet – 34.5% chance
- Coilvine Seed – 14.5% chance
- Magpie Seed – 14.5% chance
- Asteris Seed – 1% chance
- Beaded Dragon Pet – 1% chance
The Clam is the most common pet you’ll get out of the Gem Chest, and it has to be the most pointless chest pet we’ve ever had, unfortunately.
In terms of design, it’s kinda cute. It’s a lilac clam, that floats around your garden, open and closing with the pearl moving on the center section.

What Does The Grow A Garden Clam Pet Do?
“When using Watering Cans, there is a 6.53% chance it is not consumed”
I think the Grow A Garden devs are going through the Gear Shop, finding gear items they haven’t created pet abilities for.
The Squirrel is one of my favorite pets in the game, whenever I want to clean up my “event garden” ready for a new event, so I don’t use up my Reclaimers.
How many people are going to be willing to go to the effort of placing eight Clams in the garden before using a Watering Can, to hopefully not use a Watering Can from your inventory.

For reclaimers, it is absolutely worth it, as they’re not something you buy – you have to craft them. However, with Watering Cans, they are permanently in-stock 24/7.
You could do an auto-clicker overnight, for one night, and get thousands of Watering Cans, and they’re only 50,000 sheckles for 10 Watering Cans.
The Clam is such an underwhelming chest pet, which is fitting in a way, as the Trader Event is the most underwhelming event we’ve ever had – please let the next update be better…
