In this day and age, internet security is paramount. It’s extremely important to protect oneself when browsing online, regardless of what you’re looking at / for. You don’t have to be looking at your bank accounts online either, with there being security threats all over the internet, which is why anti-virus protection is essential for everyone. In addition to protecting your computer or device, there are other steps we can undertake to ensure we’re protected even more, like using a VPN when browsing online.
What Is A VPN?
You may have heard people talking about using a VPN, but what is a VPN? VPN stands for ‘virtual private network’, and it’s a private network which uses a public network such as the internet to connect remote sites or users together. It is an online service that allows you to connect to the internet through a public network, via Wi-Fi or broadband, while still keeping your data secure.
By using a VPN, you can establish a secure connection, meaning when you’re connected to your chosen VPN service, your internet service provider cannot see what you’re doing, which is particularly important if you’re dealing with confidential matters, or matters like your online banking. It also means your internet service provider cannot monitor or limit your access to websites or services, and cannot observe whom you’re talking to online.
What are the Benefits Of Using A VPN?
- VPNs can allow you to bypass geo-restricted content, websites and apps
- VPNs will disguise your IP address when browsing online
- VPNs give you peace of mind that your information will not be seen by others
- VPNs will secure your connection on unsecured networks, such as at the airport or hotel
- VPNs allow users to avoid being monitored, such as activists or journalists
For me, I like to use a VPN as it means your IP address is hidden, which enables you to access websites or services in other countries, which wouldn’t normally be visible for those living outside the country. Many people use VPNs to access Netflix from other countries, like the USA, so we can watch and enjoy the shows on Netflix USA, which the UK can’t watch. There are lots of VPN services out there, but my personal favourite is TunnelBear, which offers a free plan, and two paid plans depending on your personal needs, but there are many different companies offering similar plans, so look around to find a service which works best for your needs, to help keep you safe when browsing online.
